FAQ
Consumables Definition: Orthopedic Consumables are items that are used up, need regular replacement, or are single-use, such as Cast Padding, various Tapes (like underwrap or athletic tape), Elastic Crepe Bandages, and supplies for hygiene like Disposable Wipes. They support the function of Durable Equipment (braces, crutches, wheelchairs) but are not the equipment themselves.
Taping & Protection: Products like Underwrap or soft Stockinette are essential Consumables placed directly against the skin before applying a Brace or Cast. They protect the skin from friction, absorb moisture, and prevent irritation. Specialized athletic tapes are used to provide targeted joint support and compression.
Replacement & Hygiene: The frequency depends on use. Cast Padding is permanent until the cast is removed. Elastic Crepe Bandages or wraps used for compression should be checked and re-wrapped daily to ensure proper tension and cleanliness. If any item becomes wet, heavily soiled, or loses its elasticity, it must be replaced immediately to prevent skin problems.
Skin Protection & Padding: Look for soft, moisture-wicking materials like cotton or synthetic foam padding used in the manufacturing of the brace. For patients with high-friction areas, applying a hypoallergenic medical Tape or a thin layer of protective Underwrap underneath the Brace can significantly reduce the risk of rubbing, chafing, and pressure sores.
Maintenance: Reusable Orthopedic Consumables (like compression sleeves or removable liners) should be hand washed using a mild, non-irritating soap and cold water. Air dry completely by laying them flat. Never machine wash or tumble dry, as the heat and agitation will destroy the elastic fibers and the effectiveness of the compression.
